My friend, Ali, wrote a cool book about skirts. It seemed an odd subject for her first publishing venture. But sure enough—there was something to say. Like: The “hobble” skirt was the cause of countless deaths in the early 20th century. (Apparently, the thing shackled women at the ankle, causing [...] You know what I consider fun during the holiday season? Checking out the most expensive item in the annual Neiman Marcus Christmas Catalog (which is now actually referred to as “The Book”). One year, the big-ticket item was a million-dollar, diamond-encrusted bra from Victoria’s Secret. I do not know if they sold any…but [...] I’m sure you’re ready to give ME the boot, given my spotty blogging of late. But if you kick back and take a peek at the steals I’ve found for you, you’ll likely forgive and forget. And, if that doesn’t work, you’ll at least enjoy a charming peek at my childhood… Like a snapshot of me [...] My favorite issue of the year…. Fall’s back…and so am I. Here’s how a bargain-shopping blitz generally works with me: Something catches my eye in a magazine…I look it up on the internet…go check it out in the store…and eventually decide it’s overpriced. At which point—if I’m really fixated–I find myself back on the net searching for cheaper versions of the same [...] I’m fascinated by the current court battle known to fashion insiders simply as, “Christian Louboutin vs Yves Saint Laurent.” Want to know what they’re dickering over? A color. It seems that the folks at Louboutin—known for their distinctive, expensive, red-soled shoes—are hopping mad that YSL started churning out pairs with scarlet undersides [...] Why am I writing this? Because I can. I am not ashamed to admit my attachment to 2012’s hottest chick lit mommy porn trashy novel “book series” to hit the carpool lane. Let’s blame it on the fact that I’m a Seattleite who owns a Kindle. Though I can’t imagine there is a human out there who [...] It’s that time of year again…. Clambakes in the Hamptons…fireworks on the Jersey shore…rain in Seattle (especially, if you plan a BBQ on the 4th–that’s just asking for an all-American downpour). Okay, so here’s my motto: Anything worth buying...is worth buying cheaper. And that’s where this blog comes into the picture. I’ve been a national magazine writer and editor for more years than I care to admit. During that time, I’ve researched, written about, and played with the hottest, newest, trendiest things under the sun - from lipsticks to lampshades, denim to doorknobs (I'm not kidding... I actually had to write a story about vintage doorknobs). And while I know plenty of people who pay big bucks for the latest designer handbag, I actually get a bigger thrill out of finding really cool, obscure items for a song: a brilliant leather coat at Target, say, or a drugstore lipgloss straight from London. So hang out with me here and we’ll go shopping together for the best beauty bargains, fashion finds, brilliant home décor and more. |
