fit for a queen

Check mate!

I’m a sucker for the Royals. Back in ’81, I watched Charles’s and Di’s wedding on a small black-and-white TV set at my aunt’s house in Greece…which, in a twisted kind of way, is my pop-culture version of  “Where were you the day Kennedy was shot?” (I was in my crib, in case you were wondering. As in bed—not house.)

I’m also a sucker for a royal-blue dress. Wore one to my interview at Mademoiselle long ago, and landed the job. Years later, my editor told me she’ll never forget my vivid blue dress that day in her office. I think there’s something statement-making about the color; it’s aristocratic, classic…and gutsy all at the same time.

So I’m not all that surprised that Kate Middleton chose a royal-blue dress for the big engagement announcement this week…and you shouldn’t be surprised that I’ve been sucking up the details ever since. Including, but not limited to, the fact that Waity Katie’s $620 Issa dress sold out in 24 hours, and that Will proposed with his mother’s sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring.

A royally on-target fashion choice.

For those of you who love the look, and can neither afford–nor wait–for Issa to come out with another batch of blue, here’s a pretty fab tide-you-over number by Evan Picone; $89 at www.macys.com.

A dress you don't have to waity for.

And to complete the look, a gem of a ring ($59.99); www.emitations.com.

18K sapphire and 14 diamonds. Original price: $63,270.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Original price: $59.99

And now, on to wedding-gown speculation…please stand by for more obsessing. (Am I on my own here?)
